Anyone intending to fish the Cranfleet (between the bridges) will currently find there are as many as a dozen boats moored there (end of August 2006).

I was sure that mooring has been restricted to 48 hours, but a new sign has recently appeared showing that this stretch may be used for "temporary mooring of up to 14 days".

Some of these boats have been there all summer, and the numbers are rapidly increasing.

There is still some space to fish between the moored boats, but there is no way that the stretch could now be used for matches.

Hi John,

Is there anywhere that i can find out when the flood gates on the canal are closed ? I fished the canal sun 19th. Excellent fishing even though it was freezing but the number of boats chugging up and down made it difficult (10-15 in 2 hrs Mad

) and i assume if the gates are closed few, if any, boats will be moving.

Hi Andy

I am not sure where you could find out about the gates. I presume they are closed by a representative from British Waterways, possibly the Cranfleet Lock Keeper. You could try BW! The gates are normally closed as soon as the River Trent rises sharply. A two foot rise is often enough (especially if more rain is forecast or there is more water expected to run down the Trent). They are re-opened when levels fall to within a couple of feet from normal winter levels.

Got this from BW in reply. Nothing really for the flood gates (I assume they are shut at the moment !!) but useful one for the lock repairs in jan/feb which should reduce boat traffic for a short time.

You will find up to date info about stoppages, both planned and emergency, on our website, http://www.waterscape.com/. Just put the relevant waterway in the Search box and follow the boating links. As you’ll see, the Cranfleet stoppage is planned for 8th Jan to 16th March. For anything on the River Trent, you can always check ahead with our local office in Newark – 01636/704481.
