Hi All
I am an EXTREME begginer in the world of fishing and have just got myself my first fishing kit. I fished with my dad when I was a kid - but am 24 now and havn't fished for many many years.
Just a quick question of how to get my membership from LEVAS - I have seen the address on the site, do I just send cash and a SAE?
Also -where would you guys suggest I start my fishing? - is Erewash Canel the best place for begginers?
Thanks for your help

Hi Toby
Membership:
Firstly, to join our club (LEVAS) you may either send cheque and details to our Membership Secretary (Paul Richardson - his contact details are on this site), or you can call into Bridge Tackle, Derby Road, Long Eaton, where you may join immediately. Don't forget that where ever you fish you will also need an Environment Agency Fishing Licence, which you can currently obtain from the Post Office. These run from April to March inclusively.
Where to start:
In all honesty, sport is generally not as good throughout the Winter months as it is during the warm part of the year, as fish are less inclided to feed.
In spite of that you can still catch fish from the Erewash Canal or Grange Pond.
For the canal, as this time of year I suggest you fish with a relatively light set up. Use small hooks (around a size 20) with a hook length no heavier than 2 lb breaking strain. If using a rod and line, use a waggler float with thin top, and shot it down so only a small amount shows. Bites will then register easier. At this time of year aim to fish in the deepest part of the canal (roughly down the middle), and set your depth so your bait is close to the bottom. For bait, use a single maggot. Just feed two or three maggots where you are fishing every 5 minutes and you should catch, although it may take at hour before you get any response. If you have a roach pole, use similar tactics but with a light pole float.
The canal will normally fish better when there is a little colour in it. When it is very clear, you can still catch, but it is more of a waiting game. Also, at this time of year the middle of the day can be best, when temperatures are at their highest.
Before you fish Grange Pond I suggest you speak to one of the 'regulars'. It could pay you to go there and speak to some of those fishing. |

Welcome to LEVAS!!
I recommend having a trip to Grange pond and talking to the regulars. There are plenty of fish in Grange and you enjoy some good sport there.
Tight lines

Thanks very much for your responses gents.
I will pop into the bridge tackle shop as I am only on Bennett Street, so pretty easy for me.
I will have a go at the canal once I get my licence and membership and will also try and pop down the grange to have a chat to some regulars.
Thanks again for your help, looks like I will enjoy learning the ropes, regardless of the results!!
Thanks again
