I hope someone reads this who does not have the modern attitude of somebody else should sort this out.

Today I along with my partner and son have spent about 4 hours clearing Floating Pennywort weed away from our water at kegworth although it has to be said that this will all grow back very quickly and need doing again in less than a year!

For those who don’t know this stuff is a native of New Zealand which has been brought to Britain to stock aquaria and garden ponds. But it’s in our Rivers!

Whats the big deal I hear you say? The big deal is it’s responsible for swamping waterways, crowding out native plants and taking oxygen from fish and insects thus killing them. And it grows at a alarming rate of up to 20cm per day and will totally block the river making it unsafe for cattle and more importantly humans (the more likely victims children) to known where the waters edge is, walk in it boom you fall though it covers over again there is no way you can get out - your dead!!!!

What can be done? Well what I am asking every member of this club to do when fishing or walking their dog is take a garden rake and rope and brick and just when you see some in the margins drag the small lumps of this stuff out and chuck it up the bank where it will die. Its not hard when its in its infancy you can drag a 3 foot clump of it out in 2 min’s this will stop its speading if we ALL do it and don’t leave it to the next man. You can also ring the environment agency on 0115 846 3776 and report the sighting of this pest. You can also join a volunteer group of people who help clear this out the river their number is 0116 255 3333.
