Twice in the last three weeks at the Wednesday Opens at Makins, fish have been lost from keepnets before being weighed.
On the first occasion, the angler had packed up, removed his bank sticks, and left the tops of his nets resting on the wooden platform. The wind blew one into the water, and by the time this was discovered an estimated 80 lbs of fish had escaped. Instead of a potentian win (170 lb won) the angler came 12th with 90 lbs.
Yesterday, Andy Finley weighed in his 'small fish net' (119 lb) and asked for help in lifting out his 'big fish net'. Two of them lifted and nearly fell on their backs. There was only three fish left in the net (30 lbs). There was a tear of about 10 inches long 2 feet from the bottom of the net.
Instead of potential venue match record (Andy estimated 150+ lb in the net), he just scraped third place. He needed another 4 lb for a win!
It was suggested that what went on the scales was correct, and that he had been catching the same fish most of the day. As soon as it was returned it swam out and took another bait!
It can happen to anyone - and anglers sponsored by tackle companies still have disasters...... |
