I was piking on Grange Pond today and from my position i witnessed what i deem to be appalling fish care.
An individual spinning on the far side of the pond hooked into a fish and after a brief scap, instead of netting or chinning the fish out, he simply dragged it through the reeds and up onto the bank.
Despite their fearsome reputation, pike are infact extremely fragile fish and without careful handling will suffer more than most species.
Why on earth do people insist on pike fishing without the most basic essential equipment? I'm certain that this level of cruelty would never be practiced on carp, so why do it with pike?
From what i could see this individual didn't have a landing net with him, i can only assume he used forceps to unhook the fish, and i doub't he was fishing with adequate strength line.
I'm sure the club rules require anglers to have a landing net so this guy was in breach of these, but in my opinon it should also state other essential pike fishing equipment.
People wishing to fish for pike should check out the PAC website at http://www.pacgb.co.uk/tips/basics.html and treat pike with the same care and respect they would any species and conserve these fish for all to enjoy.
Needless to say this really anoyed me and i would have said something to the individual but in this day and age, you can never be too careful. _________________ Cheers,

If you witness similar behaviour of concern and do not take action yourself, please report it to one of the bailiffs. There is every chance that they will be able to identify the individual and would then decide the what action need be taken. This could be anything from advising them on correct procedures to reporting the case to the committee for consideration for disciplinary action.

Hi John,
If it helps, i believe both you and Tony spoke to the person in question as he was leaving, although you obviously didn't see him land the fish. Maybe you know him by name and can have a word next time.
Matbe i'm a little too 'pro pike' but i'm sure no one would ever land a carp that way. It annoys me how some anglers see pike as a pest and treat them with contempt.
Next time i'll have a word mysel, even if i do get a load of verbal (or worse) back for my trouble. _________________ Cheers,
