In the last few weeks I have fished the Horse Shoe at Kegworth three times (different swims, all midweek). On each occasion the conditions have not been favourable, weather cold and clear, river low and clear. I managed to catch between 6 and 8 lbs of fish on each session (50 to 90 fish), each time including some excellent 'net roach' (to around 12 oz, but mostly around 6 oz) in the catch. On the last occasion I took a perch of over 1 lb. On all trips I only used bronze maggot as bait, loose feeding same over a small amount of initially introduced groundbait.

On the last occasion, just above the boats, I was 'pestered' by pike. I had two on (lost both on my 0.06mm hook length and number 3 elastic) and several others struck at fish as I was bringing them in.

Another update, fished Kegworth Horseshoe (accompanied by our General Secretary, DK) yesterday. Banks frozen hard all day, water quite clear. I took 154 fish in 5 hours (1 chub of 3 to 4 lb, 1 dace, 1 bleak, 4 perch, around 20 skimmers and the rest roach) for at least 10lb. All on pole and red maggot (I didn't have any bronze). I used about a quarter of a pint. Best roach around 6 oz. I fished top end of the boats.

DK, fishing on the corner where the boats are moored half way across the river, had 68 roach, several netters, for 6 to 7 lb on bronze maggot, again presented on pole.

When we packed up (in daylight) our nets froze!

For anyone wanting lots of bites and who enjoys catching small fish this is brilliant sport.

I had some good pike sport at Kegworth over the Christmas period. I had three sessions there and, although takes were hard to come by, I caught one fish each time. Two were the "standard" size - 6 - 7 lbs, but I had one at 17lbs 2 oz, which is a personal best.

...and I finished the season there a couple of weeks ago with another cracker, at 16lb 12 oz. This really is a superb pike water. Roll on September 1st!

Fished the Horseshoe on 8 December (Monday) from 12 noon to 3.30 pm. River about 2 feet up and coloured. Fished pole over groundbait at 13m. Caught 6 good skimmers (each between 6 and 10 oz) after about an hour, then from 2.30pm had a bite every put in to take 12 good roach, smallest 6 oz, best 12 oz+. All took single red maggot. Fished again (different swim) on the Wednesday but the river had risen another 2 feet. Two bites, 2 roach, both on bronze maggot presented on the pole at 11m.
