The recent AGM clarified the rule relating to fishing for pike on club waters from 1 May 2006.
New LEVAS General Rule 11 states: "Fishing for pike on Society waters is ONLY allowed between 1st September and 14th March". |

What is the official reasoning behind this rule? The summer months provide some great pike sport with lures, could the club not ban bait fishing in these months?
I'd assumed it was in place to protect the pike in times of low oxygen content, but then why not start it in May/June...
Or is there another reason... _________________ Cheers,

Before this year the rule stated that there was no fishing for pike before 1 September with no end date. I asked the committee to either scrap the rule (which I personally consider to be outdated and with no logic) or to give an end date. They chose to give an end date (14 March). I asked why the rule existed to be told that "the rule had always existed, was the same everywhere, used to be a fishery bylaw and no-one fished for pike in the summer". I said that to my knowledge such a rule had been dropped elsewhere and was totally outdated.
If you wish to change (or scrap) this rule, you need to submit a proposal to that effect to our General Secretary before the next AGM, and then ensure you turn up at the AGM in sufficient numbers to vote it through. You will have my support. |

Thanks John,
I'll put together something in the next month or so. When is the next AGM?
I'm keen to change a few attitudes within the club regarding pike fishing and to promote their conservation.
I've spoken before about an annual pike match and maybe we could get some help/advice from the PAC.
The only problem with an AGM vote will be numbers, as i'm not aware of any other efforts to change this rule. Hopefully on the night the majority will be i favor. _________________ Cheers,

The AGM is always held on the third Wednesday in March (at the HQ - Curzon Club, Long Eaton), and proposals for AGM need to be in at least 2 weeks prior to the meeting.
I would expect that anyone making a strong arguement backed by logical reason and positive evidence would stand a good chance of getting a change.
Most of the committee don't pike fish. As`a result they would certainly listen to those who do and have greater knowledge, and would give their support (the same as they do with carp anglers and issues relating to Fletchers) as long as they can see benefit to the wider membership of LEVAS. |

Leigh. I'll attend and support you. I had been wondering exactly the same thing, so thanks for raising the question. _________________ Mmmmm! The smell of maggots.... |

An attempt to open up the pike fishing season on LEVAS waters to bring it in line nationally accepted practice was defeated at our Annual General Meeting last week.
The motion was put forward by members who are non pike anglers becuase they are fed up with hearing complaints from the pike fishing fraternity that the club do not cater for them. There was no support at all from pike anglers, who obviously don't care enough to attend the meeting (date and venue of which has been on this website and is printed in every club membership book).
I trust this ends the debate. _________________ John |

John,
Thanks for clarification, i must admit that having given consideration to the clubs 'closed season' on pike, i feel that it gives the pike in club waters much needed protection from additional pressure and capture during high temperatures and low oxygen levels.
I for one will not be persuing an end to this club rule anymore. _________________ Cheers,
