Match 9: K SMITH CUP @ MAKINS (AVON & INNER AVON) 14 August 2008

Championship match 9, for the K Smith Cup, was fished on Phase 3 at Makins, using both Inner and Outer Avon.  With only 4 of the 5 available pegs on Inner Avon being drawn it was that lake that dominated the match, filling 3 of the top five places.

Top weight was taken by Brian Leafe from Inner Avon peg 4.  After struggling to catch from either margin, Brian concentrated on the deep 'open water' directly in front of himself to catch good carp on pole presented paste and pellet for 55 lb 4 oz, which put him well clear of the field.

Inner Avon peg two provided Simon Harper with 37 lb 14 oz of fish from the margins for second place, with John Adamson's 34 lb 9 oz (taken on paste presented on14m of pole to the far bank) from Outer Avon peg 10 filling third spot.

Rob Henrick (IA 8) was fourth with 27 ln, Jamie Adcock fifth (3) with 25 lb 8 oz, with Bow Overmass (5) in sixth with 24 lb 9 oz.

Match 10 will be fished on Grange Pond (Long Eaton) on 14 September.

Junior Section Match 6: SPRINGWOOD (16 August 08)

LEVAS Juniors' Match 6 was fished at Springwood (Melbourne), where 8 year old Adam Brailsford weighed in a superb 20 lb of carp, all caught on the pellet feeder, to win.

Second weight of 11 lb was taken by 10 year old Ashley Collinson, with Curtis Hodges (aged 12) in third place with 6 lb 6 oz.

Top weight in the over 13 group was Anthony Hanstock (age 13) with a 4 lb catch of skimmer bream, ide, perch and carp, all taken on pole fished maggot over groundbait.

The final junior match of 2008 will be at Kilburn Lake, which is stuffed with small carp, on 20 September.  Phone Martin Oakes on 0115 8492737 to book a place.

Match 8: CENTENARY CUP, BODDINGTON RESERVOIR (10 August 08)

Match 8 saw a decent line up of LEVAS members on the banks of Boddington Reservoir for the annual Centenary Cup match.  Unfortunately the fish failed to respond to the wide variety of methods and baits applied by the competitors.

Top weight of 69 lb fell to Simon Harper (peg 51) with an all carp catch taken on method feeder with boilie as bait, with Tony Billington (peg 40) with 56 lb 4 oz, in spite of losing (hook pulls) as many as he landed, who also fished method feeder.

Third place fell to Andrew Williams (peg 43) with 46 lb, just enough to edge out John Adamson's 45 lb 8 oz from peg 38.  Matt Colegate took fifth with a pole caught 39 lb, with Nigel Brailsford's 30 lb 4 oz taking sixth.

Next match (for the K Smith Cup) will be on Sunday 24 August on the Avon (Inner and Outer) at BW Makins.  Names to Dave Kent please.

Match 7: MANSFIELD CUP, RIVER SOAR (3 August 2008)

LEVAS Senior Championship Match 7 was fished on the River Soar on the 'Horseshoe' at Kegworth, which once again proved an excellent summer venue.

Continuing his fine present form, LEVAS General Secretary Dave Kent, fishing long rod and stick float, caught 61 'silvers' from the middle of the river on maggot over hempseed feed, plus 7 'decent' perch from the margin on maggot for 7 lb 6 oz and yet another win.

Runner up Mick Lager caught good stamp roach for a second placed weight of 5 lb 2 oz by presenting maggot on the pole over a bed of groundbait, with Don Radmore's 4 lb 13 oz taking third place.

Junior Section Match 5: EREWASH CANAL (26 July 2008)

Match 5 saw the LEVAS Junior Section Championship match fished on the Tamworth Road stretch of the Erewash Canal. Once again all competitors enjoyed an excellent day's sport.

Top weight was taken by 10 year old Conor Hemmings.  Fishing peg 33 using a pole baited with maggots, Conor landed tench, perch and 'skimmer' (small) bream for 5 lb 2 oz, which put him well clear of Adam Brailsford (age 8) with 3 lb 9 oz from peg 35, and Callum Hemmings (age 8) with 3 lb 8 oz from peg 27.

Top weight in the over 13 section fell to 13 year old Jake Hemmings with 1 lb 9 oz of roach and perch from peg 29.  Jake used the pole and baited with maggots and pinkies.

The next junior match is at Springwood Fishery (Melbourn) on Saturday 16 August, which has previously offered excellent sport.  To book a place telephone Martin Oakes on 0115 8492737.

Match 6: RS KIRKLAND MEMORIAL & ANNUAL OUTING (27 July 2008)

LEVAS Championship match 6, the 2008 Annual Outing match (for the RS Kirkland Memorial Trophy), was fished for the first time at Lindholme Lakes (on Beeches Lake).

In spite of the hot, bright and windless conditions which depressed the weights on a venue stuffed with fish, it proved a very successful day.  Beeches was a beautiful lake and all anglers enjoyed a good breakfast and an excellent after match meal, and still managed to average around 27 lb of fish weighed in per competitor.

Top weight fell to club General Secretary Dave Kent.  Fishing peg 17, Dave landed 7 carp for around 12 lbs on corn over pellet presented on pole at 9m, before switching to right and left margins where he caught carp to approximately 5 lb on both corn and meat, to total 47 lb 2 oz.

Second place was taken by Ivan Carrier from peg 32 with 44 lb, beating Bob Dyer (peg 33) who had 42 lb 10 oz into third.

Other leading weights were: Brian Turner (peg 9) 36 lb 2 oz; Lee Westwood (peg 14) 35 lb 4 oz; Paul Richardson (peg 31) 33 lb 12 oz.

Match 7, for the Mansfield Cup is on the River Soar (Kegworth) on Sunday 3 August, with Match 8 (Centenary Cup) at Boddington Reservoir on 10 August.  Names to Dave Kent to book places at these please.
