PHIL READ MEMORIAL TROPHY FISHED AT DRAYTON RES (5 November 2006) | Print |

As most of the pegs at Boddington Res are closed to enable the long awaited peg improvement work, the Phil Read Memorial Trophy and round 14 of the Club Championship was switched to Drayton Reservoir.

In spite of several hard frosts in the past week putting fish off the feed, all of the 21 competitors enjoyed action during the day, and although many took less than three fish, many of these were around 12 lb each, making the captures memorable.

The final result was in the balance right to the very end.  It looked as though the nine carp landed on the method feeder by Paul Richardson (peg 41) would be enough.  Then, one minute from the final whistle, on peg 45 John Adamson's float disappeared.  His 20 foot rod took on its second bend of the day, and five minutes later he netted his final fish, which together with the six he had already taken weighed 85 lb 8 oz, relegating Paul Richardson's 81 lb 6 oz to second place.

John took his first five fish on method feeder fished at around 50 yards, one taking pellet and four taking dead red maggot, and his final two on cat meat fished under the rod end in 14 feet of water over pellet and corn feed.

Third place was taken by Ron Stacey (peg 47) with 5 carp on the method feeder for 47 lb 14 oz, which just edged out Anthony White's four carp 47 lb catch from peg 38.  Tony Billington was fifth with 46 lb from peg 55.

The Fletcher Cup and round 15 of the Club Championship is on the Erewash Canal on Sunday 19 November.  This will also be the club's Christmas Fayre match, with many seasonal prizes at stake.  Book in early with Match Secretary Dave Kent to ensure you have a place reserved.
