SHIPSTONE CUP (MATCH 16) SWITCHED TO CANAL | Print |

The Shipstone Cup, match 16 towards the 2006-2007 LEVAS Senior Club Championship, which was scheduled for the River Soar at Kegworth on Sunday 11 February 2007, was switched (on the morning) to the Erewash Canal (adjacent to the Fire Station).  It was considered that the still rising river Soar was in imminent danger of flooding and would be unsafe to fish.

In spite of the venue change, the match was underway by 10.30 am.  Unfortunately, probably because the canal had been iced over part of the previous week, sport failed to live up to expectations, 'bonus fish' failed to show and the match became a small fish affair.

Championship leader, John Adamson, fishing peg 19 had a good first hour on bread punch for 50 fish.  By continuing to catch the odd small fish on both punch and bronze maggot for the remaining 4 hours, John ended a clear winner with 132 fish for 3 lb 11 oz 8 dm.  With two matches of the current campaign remaining, John's 157 point (12 match) total cannot be overtaken.

Second place on the day went to Mick Lager (peg 14), who took 2 lb 3 oz of small fish on bread punch, edging Dave Kent's large maggot caught 1 lb 15 oz from peg 20 into third place.
