CARRIER WINS JUBILEE SHIELD ON COLOURED CANAL (25/02/07) | Print |

The decision to switch the Jubilee Shield from Grange Pond to the Erewash Canal proved very sound as further heavy overnight rain saw the levels at Grange rise again to a level that would have made the match a dangerous prospect.  However, none of the anglers expected to see the canal such a muddy brown colour when they arrived for the draw on the Tamworth Road on Sunday morning.

The heavy colour put the fish off the feed, and all competitors found bites very hard to come by throughout the match.  In general, bread punch, and to a certain extent even worm, failed to produce, and anglers prepared to persevere with big maggot or 'fluro' pinky generally scored best in the difficult conditions.

Top on the day was ex-National Champion Ivan Carrier.  Ivan fished peg 37 and caught mainly on pinky for a creditable 2 lb 15 oz, putting him well clear of Paul Richardson (peg 35), who fished similarly for 2 lb 8 oz  and second place.

There was a tie for third between Matt Colegate (peg 32) and Nigel Brailsford (peg 25), who both weighed 1 lb 13 oz, with Mick Lager (peg 31) taking fifth spot with 1 lb 8 oz.
