Already switched from Grange Pond to the Erewash Canal because of high water levels at Grange, after temperatures of -6C the previous night, competitors at Match 17 found thick ice on the Tamworth Road venue.

Not to be put off, the 12 competitors prepared to brave the conditions broke the ice to provide space to fish, and under the circumstances enjoyed reasonable sport.

Top weight fell to Mick Lager with 2 lb 2 oz.  Mick, on peg 43, fished bread punch for an all small fish catch of roach and skimmer bream.  Second place was taken to Pete James, making a rare appearance, from peg 45.  Pete fished similar tactics to the winner for his 1 lb 14 oz total,just enough to edge Brian Leafe, 1 lb 13 oz from peg 46 into third place.

John James (peg 33) was fourth with a 4 perch catch on worm for 1 lb 11 oz, Ivan Carrier (peg 49) taking fifth with a perch and a few 'bits' for 12 oz 8 dm.

The final match of the season, for the 'Last Bash' Trophy, will be on Sunday 9 March at Heronbrook.  Names to the Match secretary as soon as possible please.
