Barbel - Barbus barbus

Slim and streamlined, mainly found in rivers. Their colours are typical of the carp family, which they belong to. With green or black backs, golden-bronze flanks and a pale under belly.

 

 Tips

 
  • Try baits such as:

    1. Luncheon Meat
    2. Casters
    3. Worms
    4. Sweet Corn
  • Fish for barbel in the gravel area of rivers
  • Barbel naturally feed on the bottom and are very sensitive to touch and taste. Natural food sources for the Barbel are; insect larvae, worms, crustaceans such as crayfish, shrimp and fresh water mussels.
  • For bigger fish, fish around tree stumps and other foreign bodies found in the river
  • Barbel do not take kindly to being kept in keep nets, when returning the fish back to the river hold it facing upstream untill it is fully recovered.
