2017 - MATCH 17 - JUBILEE SHIELD - 22 OCTOBER

Monday, 23 October 2017 10:34

LEVAS Championship Match 17, also for the Jubilee Shield, was fished at Grange Pond on a day when anglers were battered by the remnants of Storm Brian, which whipped the wind across the lake along with swirling leaves and twigs off the trees.

Although anglers were spaced around the lake most of the weights came from pegs able to reach the island, and on a cold day many struggled for bites.

Paul Marriott and Nigel Brailsford continued their sparkling form to take the top two places, Paul with the win from peg 27 with 44-04, mainly caught fishing a feeder to the island but including two pole caught fish, a bream of 5-00 and a carp of 16-10.  On the opposite bank on peg 11, Nigel cast his feeder close to the island from peg 11 to catch carp in the 3-00 to 5-00 size range for 24-00 to take second spot.

Janet Skinner (peg 25) filled third place with 23-00, nearly doubling the weight of her husband Paul whose 11-14 took fourth place from peg 2.

Close behind were Alan Welch (peg 22) with 10-08, and Steve Hoult (peg 13) with 10-02 for fifth and sixth weights.

Although Paul Marriott won the match he has been overtaken in the Championship by Nigel. Both having exceeded the 15 matches able to count towards the final result they drop their worst points. Paul dropped 7 and Nigel only 1, leaving Nigel in front with 228 followed by Paul on 225. Although John Adamson has lost ground on the leaders he retains third place on 211, with Les Smedley on 2014 and Rob Pembridge on 202 making up the top five places.

The three remaining matches are at Rycroft (the Carp Lake) on 29 October, Lakeview (Canal & Serpent) 12 November, and Beechwood Park (Kingfisher Lake) on 10 December.  The first two will be joint matches with Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Angling Club, and the final one the Christmas Fur & Feather match.
